I thought I'd lead the way on a discussion of the Faroe Islands, seeing as there's no thread for it here!

So, who here has been/wants to go to or knows about the Faroes? We should discuss! What a rare country: almost unheard of, small, set in the North Atlantic, but so very beautiful if you delve into the culture. I will get round to uploading some pictures from my holiday there last summer Smile

Part I:

The first picture I ever took in the Faroes on the journey from Vágar airport to Tórshavn

The harbour in Tórshavn

Another view of Tórshavn, taken from a grassy area behind SMS (the hypermarket)

The island of Hestur, taken from Velbastaður

The first day of Ólavsøka: Myself and my friends Jóhannes and Bjartur in their Føroysk klæðir

The food laid on by Jóhannes’ uncle Rasmus and his family. Includes: spik, sild and skerpikjøt!

Tórshavn from the harbour

Tinganes

The island of Nólsoy, taken form Skansin (the fortress)

Of course, I had to include a picture of the partying Wink

Part II:

The day after the partying finished, we went for a walk through the countryside near Tórshavn. Here is Jóhannes showing the camera a wild orchid he picked from a brook (which flowed into the sea nearby and was sourced from a waterfall, which was our eventual goal to climb).

Here is where the brook ended.

Jóhannes and Sandy, my companion from England who joined me on this holiday! (still at the same brook!)

Our goal: the waterfall Svartur Fossur

A view of the landscape taken from the top of the waterfall

Sandy presents Góðára, an extremely nice, sweet dish which Jóhannes’ parents made for the second day of Ólavsøka, where they hosted everyone at their house (it was left over, so they gave it to us :P)

An old grindaknívur: a whaling knife

Risin og Kellingin: the Giant and the Witch

From the slopes of Slættaratindur, the Faroes’ tallest mountain.

The summit above us

From the summit at a point where the fog cleared!

From the very edge of the mountain top (I certainly did not take this; Jóhannes did!)

A lucky picture of the valley below which I got as the fog cleared briefly

The three of us that climbed the mountain: Jóhannes, Mortan and I.

Coming up in part III...
Gjógv, Kirkjubøur and Saksun!

Well then, here's part III!

The gorge from which Gjógv takes its name

The island of Kalsoy, taken from Gjógv (there were huge cliffs across the sea to my left here with puffins living on them)

The gorge from the opposite end

Gjógv as it grew dark. I think this was about 10pm.

The island of Koltur, taken from Sýðradalurur

The church in Kirkjubøur – the oldest church in the Faroes

This old house has featured in some online documentaries and is completely imported from Norway

Saksun

A couple of the mountains which surround Saksun

Jóhannes and I on the beach at Saksun

Tórshavn at night. A slightly poorer quality picture, but I have included it because you can see the sun rising in the background over Eysturoy. This picture was taken at about 1:50am.
